ROBIN MILFORD - A composer illuminated by his songs: Peter Hunter £10.00
paperback. 70 pages. 2 pages of illustrations. 102 musical examples

Robin
Milford (1903-59) included in his circle of friends the composers
Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Gerald Finzi, Peter Warlock and Balfour
Gardiner. A gentle, sensitive man, his life swung between periods of
despair and musical fruitfulness. His only son was killed in a road
accident in 1941 and this tragic event was to have a devastating effect
on the composer who eventually took his own life in 1959.
Peter Hunter has devoted
many years to the study of Milford's music and, in particular, his
output of solo songs. This book, which includes copious musical
examples, is the most detailed study of the man and his songs to date
and will, hopefully stimulate a renewal of interest in this gifted, but
neglected composer. Plans to publish the songs are already at an
advanced stage and we hope to be able to make them available early in 2010.
We are certain that
Peter Hunter's study will prove fascinating to anyone with a love of
English music. The book is meticulously researched and offers a
detailed biography of the composer as well as an analytical study of
the music, with particular reference to the solo songs.
